The Japanese battleship Yamato was the lead ship of the Yamato-class, the largest and most heavily armed battleships ever built. Commissioned in December 1941, Yamato was designed to counter the numerical superiority of the U.S. Navy by relying on overwhelming firepower. Armed with nine 18.1-inch guns—the largest caliber ever mounted on a warship—it was a floating fortress capable of devastating enemy vessels at extreme range. On April 7, Yamato was overwhelmed by waves of U.S. carrier aircraft, suffering multiple bomb and torpedo hits before capsizing and exploding, taking most of its crew with it.
