HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Supermarine Spitfire MJ627 was originally built as a single-seat Mk.IX fighter and rolled off the Castle Bromwich production line in 1944. It served with the Royal Canadian Air Force’s No. 441 Squadron, one of the squadrons that formed part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force in support of Allied ground forces after D-Day. The Spitfire saw action over northwest Europe, participating in patrols, ground attacks, and escort missions during the final stages of World War II. On September 27, 1944, MJ627 was credited with a confirmed aerial victory when F/O H.S. Umphrey shot down a Messerschmitt Bf 109 over Nijmegen.
After the war, MJ627 was converted into a two-seat Spitfire T9 trainer configuration, a common postwar modification aimed at preserving and repurposing surviving aircraft for training and civilian use. Over the decades, the aircraft passed through various private hands and restoration projects. In this rebuilt state, it retained many original wartime features while gaining the distinctive second cockpit that allowed for passenger flights. Its resurrection into flying condition stands as a tribute to the engineering legacy of the Spitfire and the dedication of restoration teams.
Today, MJ627 is operated by the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar and presented as Spitfire LF Mk.IXc "9G-Q," paying tribute to its wartime service with No. 441 Squadron (RCAF). Painted in accurate wartime livery and maintained to flying condition, the aircraft offers the public an authentic glimpse into the experience of flying one of WWII’s most iconic fighters. With its roots in battle and a second life as an ambassador of aviation history, MJ627 remains a flying memorial to the pilots who flew and fought in defense of freedom.
This 1:72 scale model captures every detail of its dual-seat trainer configuration and historic markings with precision. Perfect for collectors and aviation enthusiasts, it commemorates both the wartime legacy of the RCAF and the modern preservation efforts at Biggin Hill. A compelling blend of combat history and restoration excellence, this replica belongs in any Spitfire or WWII aircraft display.
