The Rallye Golf was born in Volkswagen's plant in Brussels in 1989. It was developed to comply to the FIA standard so they could compete in the FIA WRC. One of the standards was about the production volume. Cars which raced in WRC had to have at least 5000, but eventually they build 5071 of the Rallye Golf. Its wide arches, rectangular headlights and different alloys on the outside, make the Rallye Golf stands out from the MK2.  Powered by the 1.8 8V G60, the displacement had been turned down to 1763 CC because of the FIA regulations. For a better grip, the car was featured with the Syncro AWD Volkswagen and also featured a cable-shifted transmission. The engine put out a 161 HP in the stock version, with the Group A racing version claiming 280hp.
