Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR - Herbert Muller and Gisj van Lennep

When a Porsche model receives the RSR designation, there is no doubt: this car is made for racing with maximum performance on the circuits and with the best synthesis of performance, efficiency and handling. For the past 47 years, the Porsche – developed specifically for motor racing with the RSR badge on the rear – has competed for victories and titles in the world's biggest competitions – with enormous success. The first model in this series, the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 2.8, celebrated a flawless debut in 1973. American drivers Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg took overall victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona. In the same year, the version powered by a three-litre boxer engine won a convincing class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The ancestor of all Porsche RSR models is the 911 Carrera RSR 2.8, which was created for the 1973 season based on the Carrera RS 2.7 as a prototype to comply with FIA Group 4 regulations. Compared to the already lightweight production model, the new features were modest. The rear wheels have increased by 50 millimeters in width, the displacement of the flat-six engine has been increased thanks to larger bores, and the so-called "ducktail" on the engine cover has gradually turned into a real rear wing. In its first racing season, Porsche debuted a new version powered by a three-liter flat engine. This was followed by a 2.1-litre turbo. In 1974, the turbocharged 911 RSR was the first turbo model to write history at Le Mans.
